Break Fast For Breakfast

Did you know that breakfast literally means breaking the fast?

When you really think about it, we are fasting anywhere between 8-12 hours during the night, ranging from our last meal to breakfast. That is if you eat breakfast when you wake up! Could you imagine not eating for 12 hours during the day? Would we be starving right? Which then could even lead to......Binge Eating (gasp!)

When you are asleep your metabolism slows down and you are not burning as many calories. However, if you eat when you wake up you can boost your metabolism by working for you and start burning those calories. If you decide to skip and wait for lunch, your body goes into a survival mode. Your body basically decides to hold on to everything since your body has no idea when it is going to get the nutrients it so desperately needs.

Once you do give into your hunger pains, it is more likely that you will eat more than you normally would be had you eaten first thing in the morning. This type of eating can lead to weight gain. Morning meals allow us to portion out our meals according to our needs. It allows us to focus on our tasks at hand rather than focusing on our hunger.


Haven't you ever wondered why so many of us only eat 1-2 meals a day and still haven't even lost 1lb or maybe you even gained a few? The reasons I mentioned above are playing a role in that. We skip meals, our bodies are starving, we cannot focus, we lack the nutrients we need, our body then stores and holds onto what it can. When we finally do eat we naturally eat more than what our typical serving size should be & possibly gorge ourselves with food until we are sick to our stomachs! I know I have done this on more than one occasion in the past!

We have so many excuses or reasons that we find ourselves avoiding breakfast. Such as, we don't have time, I was busy making the kids lunch, I'll grab something after, there is nothing in the fridge that I liked…. the list goes on & on right? So what can we do to fix this? Summer vacation is at its end, almost all kids are back at school. The excuses are coming, and the lunches still need to be packed. You need to start waking up earlier than normal. I know, I am not a fan of waking up early, but isn't our health worth that little bit of sacrifice? Set your alarm for 10 minutes earlier than normal, or better yet you can prep your breakfast and your kids lunch the night before! Now you can sleep in a little bit more! Hooray! If we are being upfront with ourselves we wouldn't dream of sending our kids to school without having breakfast right? So why then is our health and well-being as adults being treated any differently by us? We should be setting the example. A good rule of thumb is to have a protein, a complex carbohydrate, healthy fats, and maybe some fruit! This does not include a bacon maple bar or a doughnut filled with strawberries! That is the rare exception, not the standard. Start putting your health as a priority starting first thing in the morning!
