'Cop-Jitsu' with Ismael "Izzy" Gomez
In this episode of The BOLO Podcast, we have Officer and Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, Ismael "Izzy" Gomez in the studio with Tamrin and Juicy. Izzy has 12 years on with the Sheriff's Department with experience working custody, patrol and currently working defensive tactics training. For the last 13 years, he has been practicing Jiu-Jitsu and is explaining how crucial training is for our law enforcement.

- Izzy is from the Bay Area born in Oakland, CA and moved to SoCal at the age of 10. He grew up in Temecula.
- A year before he started the sheriffs he started doing ju-jitsu.
- He is currently a brown belt in jiu-jitsu at Carlson Gracie in Temecula. Izzy knows it to be a very welcoming and family friendly gym and welcomes everyone to make the drive over to train. Tom Cronan is one of Ismael's mentors and says that he is a very passionate man of jiu-jitsu.
- Izzy wrestled in high school and was a fan of MMA. He started training jiu-jitsu at The Fight Lab without the uniform while also training boxing, kick-boxing. He wanted to continue his training.
- Jiu-jitsu is a great way to stay in shape and learn self-defense. For officer's, this form of training is practical for the job when having to get into your uses of force.
- Defensive tactics training in the department tends to be behind the curve and is a game of catching up. Tactics and technology are ever evolving.
- When Izzy started training, he knew of gyms where crooks were teaching others how to disarm cops, open up their holsters, take officer's weapons, and overpower them.
- Agencies now realize how important your ground game is and are starting to focus and develop officer's techniques.
- When training you have to focus on practical and realistic techniques that cops are going to retain when having to fight.
- Juicy's biggest complaint when taking defensive tactics classes is, they teach you in clean situations, and in real life, you can't be that scripted.
- Izzy has experienced that people in law enforcement don't train due to their ego; this is the biggest issue that cops have.
- 99 percent of cop fights go to the ground.
- Officer's don't want to train and be seen as weaker than their opponent when training. By training, it humbles you and puts your abilities into perspective.
- There is a difference between being fit and being able to fight.
- It is important to weight lift and be strong, but you shouldn't rely on your size. Bigger guys often don't have the flexibility, technique, and the ability to perform fighting methods that go to the ground.
- Izzy says that the culture can stifle officers. People don't want to put the extra time in, are lazy, and aren't producing while still getting rewarded.
- You have to make time and put in the work to stay ready for the job.
- "Fitness and fighting are interconnected, but don't confuse fitness with fighting." They do go hand in hand, but just because someone is fit, they may not react beneficially when fighting.
- How to breathe and to learn to control your breathing will help with your stamina when getting into an altercation.
- Heavy lifting limits your mobility and flexibility when training jiu-jitsu; it defeats the purpose of being loose and limber. Kettlebells, Bulgarian bags, TRX are great workouts to do when training jiu-jitsu.
- If you eat clean, you will perform better and aid recovery. Izzy likes to keep his protein high, low fats, a lot of greens, and veggies. If you start eating fast food and junk it will slow you down.
- Every agency should have the karade restraint approved.
- When looking for a jiu-jitsu training gym, you have to find what fits you. Choose a discipline that is practical for law enforcement. Krav maga, judo, and boxing are other alternatives that would be beneficial for cops to train.
- Ideally, you should train 2-3 times a week.
- For academy recruits, sworn and corrections, Izzy teaches the block of their instruction on ground fighting. Inservice training and stand-alone training, Ground Defense Fundamentals, is what he teaches outside of his department.
- His primary goal was to bring jiu-jitsu to the curriculum with open eyes. It took two years for his class to get approved because of liability.
- There have been countless recruits who have contacted Izzy who has joined jiu-jitsu gyms.
- Izzy's wife suggested for him to start a Jiu-Jitsu an Instagram page for law enforcement to open people's eyes to the training for officers. Look for technical, instructional, and special guest videos on their page.
