My #1 Piece of Advice on Health and Fitness

99.9% of clients and people I talk to about fitness and nutrition talk about reaching a specific number, usually it's weight and sometimes a clothing size. While having that goal is a start, it will NOT ensure nor gauge your success.

If you are one of those people (I know I was for a long time), you probably wrote it down somewhere as a reminder to keep you motivated to stay on track, then weighed yourself everyday. As the days, weeks and months (if it lasted that long) passed, that goal number started to seem unattainable and no longer kept you motivated and accountable. Sound familiar?

I'm going to clue you in to the ONE AND ONLY lesson that you need to know when it comes to fitness, fat loss, and achieving any goal. Listen up; this one is worthwhile. 


This may go against everything you've come to believe about achieving a goal, but then, your techniques may have not been exactly been working either. Not to knock others in the fitness industry but every plan I've followed, and failed at, was based on weight loss - from Weight Watchers to challenge groups. Once I got over the weight obsession and changed my focus I was able to become the fittest and healthiest I have ever been - and even better yet, sustain it for almost three years (and counting). The number that you're hoping to magically be one day doesn't matter one bit, and here's a few reasons why… 


Can you remember how it felt the last time that you ate clean, exercised hard and got adequate sleep for a few consecutive days? A feeling of momentum and motivation came over you, didn't it? Never mind that you weren't yet at your goal number, you were making progress and feeling good about yourself!

Getting down to your goal weight, and fitting into your goal size, is the direct result of living in that state of momentum and motivation for an extended period of time. You see, the momentum can be felt immediately, once you start eating clean, exercising hard and taking care of your health, whereas that "goal number" simply can't be felt until it is achieved, and so it's not as powerful a motivator.


Focus on not only obtaining and sustaining that momentum and motivation, recognize and celebrate non-scale victories on the way. Your clothes fit looser, you hit a new weight on an exercise in the gym, you lose bodyfat, you have more energy, your health improves, you can do unassisted push-ups - these are all worthy of patting yourself on the back!


Remember, there will be good days and bad days. This is a process, a lifestyle change...not a quick fix - because we all know those don't last and are usually done by unhealthy means. Trust that over time consistency will pay off - mentally and physically. If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you!

Now I'm not saying you should toss the scale out the window completely. As a Fitness Coach I use weight as one of many ways (on top of photos, measurements, bodyfat, workout progress, energy levels, healthy, sleep patterns, etc.) to gauge my clients progress. Weight is not the primary goal I am helping them try to attain; the goal is getting them to point where they understand their bodies needs and learn how to meet those needs; thus making a lifestyle change.

My challenge and advice to you is to find your motivation and make that your focus.
